In fact, the facial plastic surgeons at the Ear Surgery Center of Excellence frequently utilize a procedure known as otoplasty to correct misshapen or protruding ears and improve aesthetic appearance of the ears. Also referred to as ear pinning, otoplasty is a relatively simple surgery that can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Who is Eligible for Otoplasty?

In the same way that microtia can cause embarrassment, self-consciousness, and shame; uneven or prominent ears can be socially and emotionally damaging for both children and adults. Otoplasty may be performed at any age once the ears have reached their full size, which usually occurs by the age of five or six. The procedure is most desirable at a young age, when cartilage in the ear is very pliable and when the psychological impact of malformed ears begins to take its toll.

Before performing an otoplasty in children, it is imperative that the child’s best interest and personal preference be acknowledged. Our surgeons work closely with each child and their parents to consider the aesthetic, physical, and psychological impact that surgery will have on the child’s life. In some cases, parents may choose to wait until their child is slightly older and decides to have surgery entirely on their own. This procedure can be very effective and just as beneficial when performed on adults.

What Does Otoplasty Involve?

The goal of otoplasty is to reform the cartilage and shape of the external ear to create a more balanced and natural appearance. Surgery begins with a small incision behind the ear, following the crease where the ear joins the head. Either permanent or dissolvable sutures are used to slightly pull back the fold of the ear and make it lay flatter against the head. A needle is then used to weaken and reshape the cartilage in the ear to create an ideal structure. Natural healing of the cartilage will retain the ear in the desired position.

Post-Operative Instructions

Immediately after surgery, dressings are applied around the ears to aid in healing and comfort. If your surgery was performed under general anesthesia at our outpatient center, you will spend some time in the recovery room until the sedatives have completely worn off. You will be given a headband that should be worn continuously for at least one week to hold the ears in the desired position. Upon returning home, you should clean the incisions as advised and avoid heavy exercise and sleeping on your side for the first two weeks.
